Privacy Policy
Oratio is an iPhone app that reads your books aloud. Sergii Shulga, an independent developer, makes it. This policy explains what the app and this website do with your data.
The short version
- Oratio has no accounts. We do not know who you are.
- Your books, your reading position, and the speech that Oratio generates stay on your iPhone.
- Oratio generates speech on your device. It does not upload book text to a speech service.
- Oratio has no advertising and does not track you across other apps or websites.
- Oratio sends a small set of usage events with a random install identifier. This policy lists what they contain.
Data that stays on your iPhone
- EPUB files that you import, and books that you download from the catalog
- Your reading position, your settings, and your voice choices
- Voice models that you download
- Audio that Oratio generates. When you delete a book, Oratio also deletes its audio.
We cannot access this data. It is removed when you delete the app.
Data that leaves your iPhone
The book catalog
When you browse or search the catalog, Oratio requests book lists, search results, and the list of voice models from our catalog server. A request contains what you asked for, such as a search term, and your IP address. It does not contain an account or a device identifier, and it says nothing about the books in your library.
The server keeps technical logs of these requests, which include IP addresses. We use the logs only to operate and protect the service.
Books, covers, and voice models
Oratio downloads book files and book covers directly from Project Gutenberg. Project Gutenberg receives your IP address and the book that you requested. Its privacy policy applies to those downloads. Other catalog artwork and the voice models come from our file storage at Cloudflare.
Usage analytics
Oratio sends usage events to an analytics server that we run. The events carry a random install identifier, not your name or an account. The server uses Fantasma, an open-source analytics tool. We use the events to answer a few product questions: do new users reach a first listen, do people try the premium voices, which screens lead to a purchase, do people keep listening in their first weeks, and which voices do people use.
Each event contains:
- The name of the event, for example that playback started or that the subscription screen opened
- For a listening event, the ID of the catalog voice that was used
- A random install identifier that the app creates on your device
- The time, the app version, the iOS version, your language and region setting, and the type of device
An event never contains a book title, a file name, book text, generated audio, an advertising identifier, or an account or login identity. The install identifier is not linked to your name or your Apple Account. It is removed when you delete the app, and a new installation gets a new identifier. As with any internet request, the analytics server receives your IP address.
Purchases
Oratio Plus is a subscription that Apple sells through the App Store. Apple processes the payment. We do not receive your name, your email address, or your payment details. The app reads your subscription status from Apple on your device. Apple gives us sales reports that do not identify you.
Support email
When you email us, we receive your email address and your message. We use them only to answer you.
This website
This website does not use cookies for analytics or advertising, and it runs no tracking scripts. Cloudflare hosts the website and processes your IP address to deliver the pages.
Companies that handle data for us
- Fly.io hosts the catalog server.
- Cloudflare hosts this website, the catalog artwork, and the voice model files, and forwards support email.
- Google provides the mailbox that receives support email.
- Apple processes purchases and distributes the app.
These companies can process data in countries other than your own. We do not sell your data, and we do not share it for advertising.
How long we keep data
We keep analytics events and server logs only as long as we need them for the purposes in this policy. We keep a support email as long as we need it to help you.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it. Email support@oratioapp.com. Oratio has no accounts, so we often cannot tell which events or log entries came from your device. To reset the install identifier, delete the app and install it again.
If you are in the UK or the EU, we rely on our legitimate interests to run the catalog, to keep the service secure, and to understand how people use the app. You can also complain to your data protection authority. In the UK, that is the Information Commissioner’s Office.
Children
Oratio has no accounts and asks for no personal details. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes to this policy
We update this page when the app changes how it handles data. The date at the top shows when the page last changed.
